Patrick Keiller: The Robinson Institute at Tate Britain

Occasionally I've thought that in my role as The Berkshire Review's 'London correspondent' I ought to focus sometimes on things that are more culturally British; unfortunately, I just don't think much of British culture generally, and with the Olympics now here, decimating arts funding and forcing friends and colleagues of mine out of their homes due to massive rent increases, I feel arguably less inclined than ever to take up the baton for this country.

Photography and Place at the Art Gallery of NSW

The Australian landscape seems to require photography. The question of who, how, where, how often and why thankfully remains open, at least among the eighteen photographers included in Photography and Place at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Australia, so conflicted about cities, is one of the most urbanized societies on earth, a situation which makes the looming question of the landscape all the more urgent. Wilderness will aways dominate the continent, never allowing settlements to be interspersed as they are in the United States or Europe. The land provokes sentimentality, poetry and bitterness. In the heart of the cities which cling to the coastal fringe, it can seem another universe until a dust storm, fire, flood or the daily violence of the sunlight reminds us of nature’s nonnegotiable and indifferent presence.

Cinema Purgatorio

Five minutes’ walk from St Peter’s, in a quaint hole-in-the-wall on the Via degli Scipioni, is Silvano Agosti’s two-screen cinema – an ex-porn theatre – which boasts a domestic Sony DVD projector (operated by magical remote control) through which the proprietor showcases his very own bootleg video editions against a dark grey board. “Dove il cinema è arte,” reads the picture house’s unpretentious tagline (“Where cinema is art”).
